As some of you may recall, my purchase of an iPhone for S.Rod and I was not well timed. It happens. While rumors of the 3G iPhone released are pretty verified at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, I’m not really that bummed about it. I’ve had my iPhone for 5 months now, and am glad I did not wait any longer. It’s about the only thing that keeps me sane in my 3 hours of daily commuting back and forth to NYC.
No, the Apple item that I need to replace is my aging 733 MHz “Quicksilver” PowerPC G4 with 1.12GB of RAM. For those that may not recognize the model, this model was announced at Macworld Expo New York on July 18, 2001. I bought my G4 three days later. So yeah… It’s old. Hell, this Mac predates me meeting my wife by two years. How it is even still working is beyond me.
Nowadays, I have to do all sorts of voodoo on the G4 to get Magic Junk Radio released, as well as any time I want to retouch a photo, create some vector graphics, or make a page layout. Don’t even get me started about how Logic Express would crash. Not that I am complaining though. Technically, the G4 has outlived two cars, two iPods, and two wives. Just making sure you were paying attention on that last item.
So anyway, I’ve been in the market to get a new Mac Pro tower. Under advisement of an associate who follows Mac trends pretty closely, he told me to wait to buy until after the WWDC. So I am. With such a large purchase, I can’t afford to miss out if they release an updated Mac Pro at the conference.
However, that was what I thought back in January with the iPhone, only to be burned when they released the 16GB iPhone two weeks later. So the question is— do I wait, or should I just buy a new Mac Pro on June 10th and be done with it?

Update (6/9/08) - Seeing how they burned thousands (maybe even millions) of people with that massive price cut on the iPhone, Apple has given me good reason to wait to buy until they do their next update on the Mac Pro.
Here’s my new plan: tough it out with my G4 until Apple introduces an upgraded model. Then, the current model gets reduced in cost to eliminate the surplus. Thus, what I would have bought right now will be $600 cheaper, giving me money to buy extra RAM. I love it when a plan comes together!

I live in constant fear with my Apple purchases. I bought my iPhone about two weeks after you guys did. I didn’t care about the capacity upgrade because there was no way my iPhone could replace my iPod classic. I wish I had gotten more time between the EDGE and (probable) 3G releases, but I love having had one all this time and I’m jumping on that 3G when it drops.
I got burned on my MacBook Pro — I waited a couple months to buy it when I got pressured by TWTWIM to buy it already. Two weeks later, the new ones came out. DAMN IT! I’ll not make that mistake again. I’m not buying until the new ones come out.
